Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers

Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose of the Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers:

1. To receive donated items from the general public and businesses, and sell these items to the general public;

2. To distribute some of the donated items to other not-for-profit ministries and agencies near the local Thrift Center;

3. To send all remaining funds (income after local and corporate expenses) to ministries who will use these funds to place Bibles, New Testaments, and/or Scripture portions – and/or to train national church planters. Dedicated Volunteers and faithful, generous donors make Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers a unique shopping experience.

Bibles For Missions Thrift Centers is a nonprofit 501(c)3 ministry. Donations of cash and merchandise are fully tax deductible.

What Sets Us Apart

“You’re the department store of thrift stores.”
“I just love shopping in your store. It’s so clean and your Volunteers are so friendly.”
“You always have new, interesting, and affordable items.”

These are just a few comments told to us describing the Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers.

What makes Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers unique among the thousands of thrift stores operating across the United States? Why do thousands of customers visit Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers every day? There are two reasons:

Committed and dedicated Volunteers

These Volunteers are dedicated to seeing millions of Scriptures sent to spiritually hungry people in countries such as the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, Haiti, Venezuela, Kenya, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Eastern Europe, Ukraine, and China. A large dedicated staff allows Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers to offer cleaner, more organized facilities, affordable pricing, and exceptional service to the customer.

Superior quality of merchandise

Rooms of furniture, closets full of beautiful clothing, antiques, and valuables are donated to Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers each year. This merchandise is converted into hundreds of thousands of Scriptures. Many of the people who regularly donate items to the Centers are dedicated to seeing our mission attained.

▾ Thrift Center Mission

Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers, through the efforts of hundreds of dedicated Volunteers, fund ministries to provide Scriptures around the world.

Thrift Centers fund thousands of Scriptures every day they are open!

How? Donated items are accepted at each store and placed on the sales floor. After expenses, the funds raised are used to place Bibles in countries chosen by each Thrift Center.

Results: Through the efforts of hundreds of Volunteers in Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers, millions of Scriptures have been placed worldwide.

Thrift Center History

In the early part of 1992, Mr. Ben DeRegt, a person involved with Thrift stores in Canada, came to Michigan and spoke about the concept of starting Thrift Centers in the United States.

As usual, Mr. DeRegt’s stirring presentation motivated the members of the interested committee to, if at all possible, open up a Thrift Center in Holland, Michigan. Several obstacles surfaced, but finally a Thrift Center opened on Lincoln Avenue on the south side of Holland, Michigan, in December of 1992.

In December of 1993, a second Center opened on Douglas Avenue, on the north side of Holland, Michigan. God has richly blessed the effort in Holland by providing an avalanche of donated merchandise, numerous and dedicated Volunteers, and people to purchase the donated items.

And so, Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers, supporting ministries who provide Bibles, began.

Thank You Letter From Kenya

Dear Brothers and Sisters at the Worthington Thrift Center,

Grace and peace in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is a joy to share with you the blessings of your hand and dedicated work to provide Scriptures to the people of Kenya.

If it were not for your commitment, the hundreds of souls that come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior would have died without the Savior. Lives have been changed, families restored, communities transformed, and a great revival witnessed as the Word of God penetrates into peoples’ lives.

You may not be able to see the joy of those who turn to the Lord, but we in Kenya would invite you all to share this joy in the Spirit, being sure of this thing. “That your labor is not in vain!”

In His name,

Pastor in Kenya

This is not only accomplished by placing Scriptures around the world; this is also done in daily contact with customers whose fìrst glimpse of Jesus’ love may be in the actions and attitudes of dedicated Christian Volunteers.

A God of Abundance

Past President, Ken Jipping remembers how vulnerable he felt when he signed a lease for the first Bibles for Missions Thrift Center in the United States. “Here we were committing to a lease,” remembers Ken, “and we really didn’t know that we would have the Volunteers or the merchandise to make good on it.”

God proved Himself to Ken that He is a God of abundance.

Ken remembers a young mother who came into the Center just before Christmas. “She purchased a bicycle for her son, José, for just a few dollars. She was extremely thankful that our Center allowed her to give her son a meaningful Christmas gift.”

Still actively involved on the Board of Directors, Ken enjoys working with Volunteers across the country seeing their passion for getting God’s Word to people.

Starting a New Center

Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers have raised money to provide thousands of Bibles for people in Mexico, Bulgaria, Colombia, China, Ukraine, Kenya, the Philippines, Haiti, Eastern Europe, Ecuador, and Venezuela.

The Thrift Centers provide a great opportunity for people of all ages to make a substantial contribution to the placement of Bibles by working as Volunteers in the Thrift Centers. They serve the community in which they are located by making quality goods available at a very low cost. Most importantly, the money received from the sale of these donated goods is used to bring the precious and powerful Word of God to people who have never heard this vital message.

There are presently 14 Thrift Centers in operation in the United States. The first Center opened in Holland, Michigan at the end of 1992. Since then, over $31 million has been raised for Scripture placement.

It is our prayer that God will lead and enable you to begin a Thrift Center in your community.

A win-win situation

When the Holland Bibles for Missions Thrift Centers opened, Doug Van Hill saw a way to help the Centers and at the same time offer a unique service to his customers.

Doug is the owner of Van Hill Furniture in Zeeland, Michigan. Whenever his company delivers new furniture to a customer, his company is willing to pick up the old furniture and bring it to their company warehouse.

Twice each week, drivers from the Holland Thrift Center stop by the Van Hill warehouse and assess the used merchandise. If it is sellable, they take it to the Thrift Centers. If it is not, they dispose of it. “It’s a win-win arrangement,” says Doug Van Hill.

It would be impossible to measure the number of Bibles provided by this cooperative arrangement between Van Hill Furniture and the Holland Thrift Centers. We thank God for His provision of this wonderful partnership.

If you own a furniture store or know of one near one of our Centers who would like to do something like this for us, please contact us.
